With tears, she beseeched Sister
Mathilda to allow her to stay.  Sister
Mathilda’s words to her were, “To this
day, I have never told you to go home.
You must make your cincture.  Now go
and continue it.”  When she made her
vows, Sister Mathilda again advised her
with words of wisdom, “You must always
pray to in thanksgiving to God that you may stay in the convent.”

Sister Margaret’s philosophy of life is to enjoy each day to the fullest and to associate with positive people.  She has shown that positive outlook to others throughout her life and continues to make all of us grateful that God showed her the way to Wichita many years ago.

A journey from County Cork, Ireland to Wichita, Kansas, U.S.A. resulted in blessings for all of us who have come to know Sister Margaret Nugent.

Her elementary education took place in a two-room school where the lower grades were taught by one teacher and the upper grades by another.  Margaret’s secondary education began at Presentation Convent School for girls.  To attend that school she had to ride her bicycle five miles into town.  During those years, sisters from various religious communities would visit the school and speak to the students.  The young girls were only too happy to be excused from classes to hear the sisters talk about religious life in Australia, England and the United States!  It was at that time Margaret desired to learn more about the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Wichita.

Besides being called to the Sisters of Saint Joseph, Margaret was also called to the ministry of education.  She remained in that profession as an elementary school teacher and principal from 1957 until the present time.  She believes that the best experiences of her religious life took place in the classroom as she had the privilege of teaching young children and watching them grow and could recognize God’s presence in all her encounters with students, teachers and parents in and outside the classroom.

passage makes her aware that Jesus is there handling the problem and that he needs only a little help.  If she does her part, God will do the rest and .  .  . all will be well.

Margaret believes that the most significant people in her life have been her family, the Irish priests, Sister Marietta Conrady and other wonderful friends.  Her parents are looked upon as the wisdom figures in her life, as are Sisters Eustasia Myers, Aloysia Frederich, Joachim Walpelhorst and Margaret Lero.
